Abstract

This study explored the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for lifelong learning in development communication in Nigeria, focusing on the opportunities, challenges, and future directions. Anchored on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, the study adopted a qualitative research design using the interview method. Data was to elicited from a purposive selection of 18 development communication lecturers in the tertiary education sector across Nigeria’s 6 geopolitical zones. Findings revealed that AI holds transformative potential for lifelong learning by offering opportunities for personalized and scalable learning, expanded access, reskilling and up-skilling to assist development communication lecturers adapt to the ever-changing demands of the workplace. The study, however, highlighted challenges such as infrastructural limitations, biased or linguistically alien algorithms, policy framework, low digital literacy, and ethical concerns. It concluded that the potential of AI in lifelong learning can be realised through inclusive strategies that address infrastructural gaps by developing communication skills, building digital capacities among development communicators, and promoting ethical, context-specific AI applications.  By aligning AI with the principles of development communication, development communicators in Nigeria can create a more equitable and empowered learning ecosystem for sustainable development.
