Conservation Status and Distribution of Fish Species in River Singla in North-East India: Pioneering Taxonomic Study and Report

Abstract

Ichthyofaunal  surveys conducted  in the  River  Singla  situated  in the Sribhumi district (earlier Karimganj district) in the  province of Assam,  revealed  the occurrence of  41 species of fishes  belonging to 34 genera, 8  sub-families, 19  families and 7 orders during the entire period of study. These include 25 species  of  fishes  under Cypriniformes; 5 ichthyospecies  each  under Siluriformes  and Anabantiformes; 2 species of fishes under Synbranchiformes; and, 1 species of fish each under Osteoglossofrmes,  Mugiliformes, Beloniformes and Gobiiformes. Distrubution   and  Conservation status of each fish species have been discussed in the present communication .
