Abstract

At the core of suicidal phenomena lies pain stemming from unmet basic needs and frustration (Shneidman, 1993). This article seeks to understand what those needs are that provoke unbearable pain and even a desire to relinquish life. Will the fulfillment of these needs rekindle the desire and necessity to cling to life? What about the needs that remain unmet, for which the window of opportunity has faded? Or those that are somehow unattainable? Is there a way to contain such frustration and coexist with it peacefully?
